Finland’s weirdest baby names

News outlets in Finland recently published a list of baby names rejected by the Finnish authorities in 2022. In Finland, names must be registered in the population database. A naming oversight committee has the final say over which names are acceptable.

The rejected names included:

Jezebel (likely inspired by this)
Kaaos (meaning Chaos)
Lucifer
Paperi (Paper)
Uhka (Menace)

and the definitely different Nat8hquhs.

In previous years, Finnish authorities have rejected names including:

Alcapone
Ammu (Shoot)
Tuhka (Ash)
Xstina

and Sweethoneybeebambi ← my personal fave.

Neighbouring Sweden also regulates baby naming. In 2010 CNN reported that Swedish authorities had rejected the names:

A (pronounced ‘Albin’)
Metallica
Superman
and (of course) Ikea.

Authorities accepted Google (as a middle name) and Lego.

In Denmark, meanwhile, don’t even try to get creative when naming your child. There, parents must choose from a list of 7,000 names.

Back in Finland, the names deemed acceptable by the naming oversight committee last year were no less weird. Accepted names included:

Aamuntähti (Morning Star)
Bobandy
Heito (Throw)
Mieli (Mind)
Pöly (Dust)
Taide (Art)

and Unikonsiemen (Poppy Seed).

More Finnish Names

Many Finnish first names refer to nature such as these names for girls:

Lumi (Snow)
Marja (Berry)
Pilvi (Cloud)
Tuuli (Wind)
Usva (Mist)
