Trying to Rediscover My Love of Reading and Three Medium Stories I Recently Read And Loved
Do these stories also capture your attention and your heart?
Since finishing my Ph.D. at the end of 2020, I have struggled — after many years of reading being work — to read for pleasure again.
As a child, I was an avid reader. I remember being given a Jacquline Wilson book for Christmas and finishing it before the end of December 25th.
Recently, due to a mix of PhD-induced burnout and pandemic malaise, I have struggled to ‘get into’ most novels I start reading — they just can’t get and hold my attention.
That’s why reading on Medium is such a joy. The short form, the many talented writers on the platform, even the way stories are laid out with plenty of white space make it much easier for me to get drawn into a story, and to keep reading.
Reading makes us better writers. As one of my fellow Medium writers eloquently puts it:
Writers who don’t read are (like) chefs who don’t eat…When a writer reads we are exploring our craft. We are taking the time to look at how someone else did it.
Here are three stories I read recently and particularly enjoyed.
